Album Review: Lisa Cuthbert - Obstacles

Piano based debut album of big anthems from a great singer. There's much to admire on this record! Last week I received an email which described my writing on the blog as simplistic yet sophisticated! I'll try to review Obstacles in the same way. I'll state from the beginning that in general the album didn't do much for me. I didn't get that warm glow you tend to get when listening to music you enjoy. However there is so much to be admired on Lisa Cuthbert's debut. Obstacles is packed full of big anthems. I love how the short opening track runs seamlessly into the second song! Many of the tracks hit the five minute mark with a couple past seven minutes. There's big orchestral songs on this album with delicate pieces of piano bookending the songs. Obstacles flirts with progressive rock, pop, Kate Bush era 80's music and could also be described as Enyaesque. On some tracks the music reminds me of a Broadway soundtrack. This post represents blog co-operation at it's best. Ronan over at Swear I'm Not Paul and myself have been working on creating a list of 10 Irish acts who we believe will make considerable progress towards world domination in the coming 12 months. Ronan picked five acts and I picked five acts ready to dominate your music world in 2009. Aortal Aortal are a three piece power alternative rock band with an amazing vocalist. Their MySpace with 20,000 plus friends describes the band as " ..... a Dublin three piece fronted by James O' Toole on guitar and vocals with Conor Friel on bass and Jay McNamara on Drums. This exciting new act combines striking vocals and visuals with the raw energy of a pumping heart." Féile Remembered

It's been in the news that 25 years ago Irish Summers got a bit more interesting with the arrival of Féile festivals. I was lucky enough to be a mid teen attender at Feile 1994 with great memories of dancing to Blur, the dangerous mosh pit of 'House of Pain' the rock and roll swooning of Primal Scream and perfect pop of Bjork. There are currently no posters online for the Feiles of 1993 or the last one in Turles is 1994.
